Tour Plan

Day 1 Tanger and the Rif road to Chefchaouen

A gentle opening day. We leave the coast at Tanger and climb into the Rif, stopping at Tetouan on the way, reaching Chefchaouen with the afternoon free to walk the blue medina before the light goes.

  • Morning pickup from your accommodation in Tanger
  • Coast road east with views back across the strait
  • Tetouan and its UNESCO-listed medina, the most Andalusian in Morocco
  • The climb into the Rif mountains
  • Arrival in Chefchaouen around midday
  • Afternoon in the blue-washed medina and Place Outa el Hammam
  • Optional walk up to the Spanish Mosque for the view over the town

Overnight in Chefchaouen.

Day 2 Chefchaouen to Fez by way of Volubilis and Meknes

The historical day. We come down out of the Rif to the Roman city at Volubilis, then on to Meknes and its imperial gates, arriving in Fez in the evening. Around five hours of driving spread across a full day of stops.

  • Morning departure from Chefchaouen
  • Descent through the Rif to the Sais plain
  • Volubilis, the Roman provincial capital, with its mosaics still in place
  • Moulay Idriss, the hill town above the ruins
  • Lunch in Meknes
  • Bab Mansour and the imperial walls
  • Arrival in Fez in the evening

Overnight in Fez.

Day 3 The Fez medina, then the coast road back to Tanger

A morning in the oldest of the imperial cities, then the drive north. Fez to Tanger is around four hours, so the medina visit runs to early afternoon and we take the coast road home via Asilah.

  • Morning in Fez el Bali, the walled medina
  • The Chouara tanneries, seen from the terraces above
  • Al Quaraouiyine and the Bou Inania medersa from the street
  • Lunch in the medina
  • Afternoon departure north
  • Asilah, the whitewashed Atlantic town with its painted ramparts
  • Evening arrival and drop-off in Tanger

Fez deserves longer than a morning. The six-day itinerary from Tanger gives it a full day and a second night.
